Weekly Commentary
NASDAQ Downturn Confirmed

We have warned for two weeks  that the NASDAQ composite was threatening a bearish head and shoulders top pattern and that was confirmed on Thursday as the index closed below the neckline. At the same time our market signal for the NASDAQ turned negative, joining the signals for the DJI and S&P 500 which have been negative for over a  week.

The chart shows that volumes this week were below average each day which attests to the downbeat mood of market participants and explains the relatively few breakouts (12) this week. Low volumes also reflect lower volatility which explains why the majority of breakouts came from the Volatility Squeeze pattern
