Volatility Squeeze Breakouts Average 8.4% Gains
The NASDAQ comfortably outperformed the other major indexes with a 0.9% gain. Only the DJI slipped as the markets digested some conflicting economic news. The estimate for Q4 GDP growth (2.6%) was below that of the two previous quarters implying that the economy is slowing. That concern was offset by a rise in consumer confidence and extension of the deadline for imposing higher tariffs in Chinese imports. The NASDAQ is now comfortably above what was resistance at the 200 dma level which now becomes a support level should the market fall.
This was a strong week for breakouts with 20 from the cup and handle pattern and 6 from a Volatility Squeeze. On average the Volatility Squeeze candidates delivered an 8.4% gain. A volatility squeeze occurs when the Keltner Channel falls within the 2 SD Bollinger Band. We put stocks that meet this requirement and have positive and increasing momentum on our Volatility Squeeze watchlist. The best performer this week was ACAD:
