Market Signals Turn Negative; NASDAQ forms Possible Head and Shoulders Top

Tariff retaliation by China sent the indexes sharply lower on Monday and caused our market signals for the NASDAQ and S&P 500 to turn negative, joining the DJI signal that had already turned down on May 9. The NASDAQ ended the week below its 50 day moving average for a loss of 1.3%. History tells us that there are fewer breakouts when the signals are negative so extra caution is advisable.

Adding to the negative technical information, the chart shows that the NASDAQ could be forming a bearish head and shoulders top. The pattern would be confirmed should the index fall below the neckline at approximately 7600. The support level just below that is the 200 day moving average.

NASDAQ Chart

Following Monday's selloff the NASDAQ did move upwards until Friday, but as the chart shows, volumes were below average with the result that the number of successful breakouts fell to 10, half last weeks total. Average gains were quite good although the cup and handle average was helped by GRVY with a 26% gain.
